"If we are to teach real peace in this world, we shall have to begin with the children." - Muhatma Gandhi
The Aki Kurose Middle School design process has been a true community journey. Over several months, the Culturally Responsive Design Team, made up of students, teachers, staff, and community members, came together with a shared purpose: to capture the soul of the community and honor the legacy of Akiko Kurose.
Kurose, the daughter of Japanese immigrants, dedicated her life to racial equality, peace, and the transformative power of education. Her deep love for children continues to guide the school today.
The renovation and modernization of Aki Kurose Middle School weaves moments of liberation, belonging, and the possibility for future generations while honoring the stories and struggles that shaped the past. It is a space built not just for learning, but for hope.
